So, tell me...
Who: Recluse and Hawke
When: Some time after she tackles him off a roof.
What: Sometimes you just gotta talk to a hero!
He stubbed his boot heel along the edge of the building and waited. She'd be by, she had her patterns and her area she watched, right? That meant, hah, there, "HEY!" He...hadn't asked her name in mask had he?
Shit.
The swinging figure in the distance diverted in his direction and that made it officially too late to rethink this right? Right. Well, better than fumbling around in the dark right? "So, I had some questions..."
"Nice to see you too," Recluse offered when she landed, crouching, on the edge of the roof. "Shoot, I've got a minute." Maybe.
Right, this was actually a job for her. Did she get paid? Huh, weird thought that. "Nothing major just...wanted the lay of the land? Who's who, places I shouldn't go because people are territorial?"
Oh, really? That was all? Wish for the moon..."Sure, no pressure or anything," she chuckled dryly. "Stay away from Castle, general rule. He'd respect you at least, but he's still a bit screw loose. I'm keeping an eye on him. The rest..." was complicated?
"Gonna take more than a minute," he summed up with a grim smile.
"Bingo nano-boy. Tell you what, I need to get back on my beat," kind of urgently. She was making sure people were getting used to seeing her in the Meat Packing District, and making sure she could hoof the whole territory without collapsing. "Keep up and we'll talk as we go."
"I should have seen that coming too," he chuckled, wincing as she stood, spread her arms, bad fell backward off the ledge. "She's a gymnast spider she's a gymnast spider..." She'd be FINE. And he was...far less graceful as she jumped down after her.
Keep up she said. Like it was just that easy.
At least his nanos were intrigued? he could feel the bubbly, near fizzy thrill of finally doing something from them and that meant he was at least not too far behind her by the time he figured out jumping across roofs was better than bouncing down into alleys on his hops.
And how the hell did non-flyers and non-slingers navigate the city when frog hopping was the alternative?
Fuck. Worry about keeping the pint sized hero in sight, mental map later. Right. "Listen, I just..."
"Left, that's a homeless safe zone, alley not building, they tend to be quiet and want to stay out of trouble!" Recluse pointed out easily. "Ahead is the start of Red Light for this district, that can get bad, but not always. Stop, observe, check for jittery Johns. Okay, just past is a few unconverted warehouses, always a good spot for drugs. Dangerous because a lot of buyers and dealers are armed. Best tactic?"
"Tag and take them out when they separate!" He snapped easily, shooting a glance in every direction he indicated.
"Good plan, you got tags?"
...did he? He hadn't thought of gear yet okay?!
"Too long, you're out, sit tight soldier." Annnnnd she was off, down to the warehouses. Damn. Why was he listening to her and waiting?
...
...because it made sense. Damn it.
Seven dangling thugs later and they were moving once ore, "okay, territories. That's complicated. We're not really territorial? I guess? We are here to help. That said we try to keep from too much overlap as it keeps the widest range of places covered. It's important you take breaks, you have to or you get burned out, if you get burned out people are likely to die. When you find a run you are comfortable in get to know your neighbors, take days off when they can cover and cover for them..."
"This is..."
"Not what you were expecting when you decided to put on a mask?" Recluse laughed. "We're not a bunch of deranged people you know. We do an important job, and a dangerous one, and we have to do what we can to mitigate that." She'd been trained by her dad, you didn't get more dedicated than Spiderman really. Daredevil had his demons, Elektra her atonement, and Castle his insanity...Spiderman had Responsibility.
"...very well thought out. Who do we answer to?"
"Each other. Be able to believe in your actions, Hawke, do what's right and make sure to mitigate damages or we will take you down."
She was a tiny thing, that shouldn't sound as threatening as it did. "And if I change my mind?"
"Will you?" Recluse laughed, launching straight from a swing into the side of a man who was coming out of a window. "You have a sense of responsibility, you can't go back into the military with proprietary tech, and you don't do well sitting things out. That said? You change your mind, you leave the life. Keep your friends, but don't dabble, it's dangerous."
Yeah, all or nothing, no middle road. "That's what I thought. Acceptable terms, those." He could work with that. Even though she had another guy dangling from a fire escape, yup.
"You're still working out what you can and can't do," she noted back on roof level. "So, if you've got no other plans you can be my padawon. That weirds you and I can find someone else to show you the ropes!"
"Gee, let me think, fall on my face in front of a complete stranger or in front of a kid I know. Let me think about that one."
"Take your time!" she offered cheerfully, "we're barely even started!"
...of course they weren't.
